Has your furnace function gone from hot to cold? Might be time for a new one

Your furnace keeps your home warm and cozy, providing an environment of comfort and protecting it from frigid winter temperatures.  While you may not often think about your furnace, when it isn’t functioning properly—or at all—your furnace quickly becomes the focus of your attention.

Today’s furnaces are designed and built with the most advanced technology and high-quality materials.  Yet as with any electro-mechanical system, every furnace will begin to wear out over time.  While annual service and maintenance are a must for keeping your furnace running, even these essential activities can’t keep it running at peak efficiency indefinitely, and repairs must be done. Eventually the efficiency of your furnace drops off, your heating bills increase, and furnace repairs become more frequent—and more costly.  When these things start to happen, it’s a good time to consider replacing your old furnace with a new one.

Is it time to replace your furnace?

Continuing to repair your furnace or replacing it altogether is a big decision and can result in a considerable cost if you decide it to replace it.  While it’s true that furnace repairs are significantly quicker and less expensive than the cost of a new furnace, the reality is that at some point, continuing to repair may not be the best choice, and new furnaces provide energy savings through higher efficiency.

Here are some factors to consider when weighing whether to repair or replace your furnace:

  • Furnace age – Most furnace systems are capable of dependable operation for about 15 years, but with age, a furnace’s efficiency begins to decrease.
  • Frequency of repairs – Aside from routine maintenance and the occasional repair here or there, if your furnace begins to require even small repairs every year or more often, repair costs will quickly escalate. And you may often continue to have problems even after repairs.
  • Cost of repairs – While minor repairs are inevitable and typically considered part of routine maintenance, more expensive repairs will eventually be needed, such as the replacement of more complex, critical components.
  • Energy bill cost – As a furnace ages and becomes less efficient, you will begin to see your energy bills increase.
  • Noise – A furnace on its way to failure will often produce excessive rattles, buzzes, hums, or other sounds that it had not previously made.
  • Increase particulates – A furnace that puts out soot, rust particles, or dust is a sign of a furnace with issues.
  • Uneven heating – Failing furnaces often heat some rooms more than others, resulting in unevenly heated zones or rooms in your home.

BENEFITS OF GETTING A NEW FURNACE INSTALLED

As you’ve probably guessed from the list above, there are several benefits of installing a new furnace in your home.  The most important is that your home will feel more comfortable with more consistent temperatures.  You’ll very likely not need expensive repairs for many years.  And you’ll see a reduction in your energy use, meaning lower monthly energy costs.

Options in high efficiency furnaces

Once you’ve made the decision to replace your furnace with a new one, you’ll want to consider furnace model, balancing the proper comfort, affordability, and efficiency for your home.  While furnaces with higher efficiency ratings are more expensive, in the long run they are likely to be more beneficial depending on your annual heating costs.  Here are three general furnace model categories to consider:

  • Single Stage – ECM Motor with 95% AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is a solid, entry-level model.
  • Two Stage – Variable-Speed ECM Motor with 96% AFUE and quiet operation.
  • Modulating – Communicating Variable Speed Constant Airflow ECM Motor with 98% AFUE, the highest level for a furnace.

Pre-Installation

Once you’ve selected the best furnace system for your home, there are several steps that will need to be performed and should be done by a trained, professional HVAC company.  First, ductwork will be cleaned, removing dirt, dust, and other debris that collect in the ductwork that greatly reduces heating efficiency.  The ducts will be sealed, and minor repairs performed to prevent energy waste and negative effects on indoor air quality.  Also, attics, crawlspaces, windows, and doors will be inspected to determine if they are potential areas of heat efficiency loss.  In some situations, insulation may need to be added in some areas to help improve heat efficiency.

Installation

Faulty procedures during installation will affect performance, energy consumption, and the unit’s operating life.  Basic furnace installation steps include installing a new furnace cabinet, connecting the new furnace into your ductwork, linking the new furnace to its power supply (such as natural gas, electric, propane, and so forth), and testing the new system to confirm its function and safe operation.

Accessories

In addition to installing a new furnace, there are upgrades and add-ons to the furnace system that likely were not available when your previous furnace was installed, such as programmable or “smart” thermostats or whole-home air purifiers and humidifiers.  Programmable thermostats provide an easy, automated way to manage the temperature and humidity even when you’re away from home. Smart thermostats with Wi-Fi give you even more flexibility, with the capability to fully control your HVAC system from an app on your smartphone.
